World's Most expesnive citties: Abuja on list

By Admin on 15th August, 2009, 66 Views

I came across a post from businessweek about the world's most expensive cities 2009

I dont know where they got their findings from, or on what basis, but from what i see on the detailed list on each city, they base their judgement on
1. Price of a movie ticket
2. Price of a quick lunch/meal
3. Cost of a washine machine
4. Price of a kilogram of rice
5. Price of a can of soft drink.

I guess its just based on cost of living. They should have said WORLD'S MOST EXPENSIVE CITIES TO LIVE IN, because when i saw the post, i was thinking it would have something to do with accommodation, cost of acquiring a land, house or cost of renting.

On the list of, i wasn't startled to find Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory

Abuja. Last year was ranked No. 16 This year its ranked No. 18
Below are the infos they used in deciding
.

Movie ticket: $10.37
Quick Lunch: $24.68
Washing Machine: $669.38
Kilo of rice: $7.79
Can of soft drink: $1.77

If i calculate the present CBN dollar rate against the naira, which i will put at N140 to $1. Then the prices of these commodities in naira are as follows.

Movie ticket: $10.37--------------N1,451.8
Quick Lunch: $24.68---------------N3,455.2
Washing Machine: $669.38----------N93,713.2
Kilo of rice: $7.79---------------N1,090.6
Can of soft drink: $1.77----------N247.8

Based on the above equivalent in Naira, the only thing i agree with on the list is the price of a movie ticket. Which is relatively high, because a movie ticket in abuja during the weekdays is N1,000.

The price of a quick lunch is ridiculous because for N1,500 you would have a wonderful meal in any of the fast foods or eatries around the city.

Washing machines can be bought for as low as N35,000 for manually operated ones and N65,000 for automatic, that comes with wash, rinse and dry.

A kilo of rice which is usually measured in a tin or can is about the same price as they have listed

A can of soft drink is about N150, so i highly disagree with their price.

This is a rough estimamte, and i stand to be corrected, but businessweek should let us know where they got their stats from, they should not scare away foreigners wanting to invest in our country, or Nigerians in diaspora, who would assume that the situtation over here is critical.
